Recent community activity
Mailing list merge
- Check out the traffic growth!
- Responses:
- Stefano likes it
- People don't seem shy, seem happy to raise thoughts or what they're working on
- More inclusive, less stuff hidden
- Need to finish the transition.
Other
- Lots of good interest in refactoring in the Commons recently (mostly off Discuss posts)
Community roadmap
- Historically, there has been tension between community and commercial goals on Freebase.com. This hasn't been ideal for either side.
- Going forward, these will be more cleanly separated: different experiences for site-owners/commercial interests vs. community/contributors (many links will be retained between the two, however)
- specifically, the topic page will revert to a community-friendly, contribution-focused page (the consumer page will still be available elsewhere, but it won't get in our way)
- other parts of the site (eg. homepage) will be able to focus more on community needs
- community will have increased autonomy and control
Wiki as doc homepage
- We will be using the wiki as the central repository for docs and integrating it into freebase.com
- Work to do:
- theme/style
- migrate/delete old help stuff from freebase.com (and add redirects)
- improve front page and general structure of wiki to help people find stuff
Open source approach to tools
- We want to give more prominence to community-built Acre apps and integrate them more strongly into Freebase.com. Eg.
- expert tools
- contribution-focused apps / data games
- To do this we need better workflows for collaboration on Acre apps, i.e. a fuller open source development model
- Daniel O'Connor's suggestions re: "request adminship"
- Patch/merge flow -- in progress!
Prioritisation of platform/apps
- What does the community want most for Freebase.com?
- What is the best way of gathering this? (mailing list, Jira, wiki)
Meetups
SF Freebase Meetup, 10th Feb
Speakers:
- Michael re: wordpress plugin
- Brian K re: something data pipeline related
- Raymond Yee re: open government
Other
If you would like to have a meetup in your city, or talk about Freebase at another meetup/event/conference/whatever, let us know and we can help. (Specifically, contact Kirrily.)
General Q&A
- ...
Meta
Skype sucked today! Need to consider whether to keep using Skype like this, switch to IRC, or what. We should poll the community before the next meeting and discuss what's the best way to do it.
