Beta is a designation Metaweb gives to features/products which are fairly well developed but not yet fully supported.

A visualisation of the alpha/beta/release stages

Beta software has the following attributes:

  • Maturity -- the shape of the product is fairly well understood and set in place
  • Commitment to release -- Metaweb is committed to releasing the product (i.e. non-beta release)
  • Stability is not guaranteed, but an attempt is made to keep the product fairly stable and to notify users/developers if there is downtime
  • Backward compatibility is not guaranteed, but an attempt is made to provide advance warning of changes that may break apps
  • Documentation exists, though it may not be fully polished or complete
  • Support is provided on public mailing lists, through the discussion forums on Freebase.com, etc. There is wider support involvement from Metaweb staff and the community at large.
  • There will be an official announcement of the Beta release

Beta software should be labelled as such.

  • If the product has a UI, it should include an "Beta" badge linking here
  • The documentation (on this wiki or elsewhere) should mention beta status and link here
